About the event
This in-person lecture will explore the life and legacy of two pivotal Native American leaders, Rev. Paul Cuffee and Rev. Peter John. Both played critical roles during the Great Awakening, a spiritual movement that swept across the Eastern seaboard in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Rev. Paul Cuffee was a Montaukett and Shinnecock minister who founded the first Native American church on Long Island, and Rev. Peter John was deeply connected to the Montaukett community and their spiritual survival. Dr. Evans-Sheppard, a descendant of Montaukett leaders and an expert in tribal history, will offer insights into the faith, resistance, and resilience of these men and their communities.
